Deceased Would Be Memphis City Council Member Ready to Serve

When an elected official’s position becomes available outside of an election year cycle, there’s usually more “wheeling dealing” than on NBA Draft Day. This was observed in the last fiasco when the Memphis City Council opened and closed and opened and closed a “ruleless” process to fill a board opening.

We would like to propose that all future vacancies be filled through a random drawing (lottery) of registered voters until a special election can be held.

Joe Citizen needs a place at the table. These temporary vacancies, usually caused by politicians, belong to the voters. The possibilities could be refreshingly progressive. However, if our local election system has not been fixed, we might have a dead city council person ready to serve.
